Awesome Anthuriums

People used to put anthuriums with other tropical flowers and call it a day. Not anymore!

Anthuriums - not what comes to mind when you think of summer or fall? Well, think again. Once confined to the rank of tropical flower, the anthurium has entered a new realm.

Think of a contemporary summer design with orange/red bi-color dahlias - and orange anthuriums. Think of a sophisticated fall arrangement with rust and red lilies, mango callas-and chocolate anthuriums.

Are we still talking about the heart-shaped flowers? Yes! A native of the tropical jungles of the Americas, anthuriums are now available year-round from California! Ever-Bloom Inc., located in Carpinteria, known for its gerbera daisies, has expanded into Anthuriums.

Besides red, pink and white anthuriums, now there are green, orange and brown versions of this exotic flower, all grown in California. Ready for another news flash? There is also a new series of petite anthuriums with blooms that are three to four inches in diameter.

With new colors and a new size, anthuriums have moved from the tropical category into broader usage. The new small "Maxima" varieties are available in pink, red, and green, with 18-24 inch stems. Because of their diminutive size, these flowers are in demand for weddings as well as arrangements.

Standard anthuriums, which are about 6 inches in diameter with 20-24 inch stems, are available in sensational new colors. There is red brown 'Choco,' orange 'Casino,' and dark red 'Chicas'. Green 'Pistache' has dark orange veining.

"Anthuriums work well with traditional flowers, like gerberas, lilies, callas, and roses, in blended color combinations," says CCFC's education team member Keith White AIFD, Houston, Texas. As an example, try orange anthuriums, orange gerberas, and orange 'Milva' roses.

Summer, fall, winter, spring--there is a niche for this flower in every season. Winter red anthuriums with red lilies and berries; spring green with green gladiolus and carnations. Orange-reds with 'Prado' sunflower and pincushion protea.

You see the possibilities?

More costly than some specialty flowers, the anthurium earns its value with an incredible vase life. If consumers re-cut the stems once a week, the flowers will last a full 4-5 weeks.
